Introduction

Energy is a fundamental provider of the convenience and comfort we enjoy in our daily lives, and at the same time it serves as a very basic stepping-stone that can promise the sustainable growth of our future society. As one of the world's top five crude oil importing countries, Korea has a precarious economic structure depending heavily on imported energy. The current generation, therefore, has a sacred responsibility and duty to develop the technologies essential for clean and reliable future energy sources for the next generation to inherit. KFE is a unique national laboratory dedicated to conducting research on and engaging in the development of fusion energy, which has been attracting worldwide attention as an inexhaustible source of future energy. Employing our domestic technology, KFE has constructed the world's highest-ranking fusion research device called KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) and established an initial performance milestone by successfully generating the first plasma, thereby bringing the dream of fusion energy commercialization a step closer to reality. Having completed the construction of one of the world's most sophisticated fusion devices, our task is now to plan to serve as a global fusion research hub by utilizing KSTAR as an international joint research facility with the participation of the world's experts and with foreign research institutions in the US, Japan, EU, and other countries. Potential benefits of this collaboration will include joint development of key technologies for fusion power generation as well as training of junior fusion scientists and engineers. KFE is deeply committed to doing its best to become a
