Atmospheric radiation & ocean remote sensing
Summary
Lecture Objectives
- Understanding the solar and earth radiation spectrum at the top of the atmosphere is fundamental in ocean remote sensing. Removing absorption and scattering by atmospheric gas and aerosols are critical steps in ocean color remote sensing in the visible wavelengths. Earth radiation via thermal emission from the ocean surface is crucial for estimating sea surface temperature. In this class, we will cover fundamentals of atmospheric radiations related to ocean color and temperature remote sensing: black body radiation, Wine’s displacement law’, Absorption(Bohr model), Beer-Bouguer-Lambert Law, atmospheric gas absorption, Rayleigh/Mie scattering, aerosol optical properties, radiation correction to derive the TOA radiance from satellite observations, and installing and running RTM simulation.
